Guide to Lunar Planting

A question that I am commonly asked is when the proper time to plant seeds is, well the answer to that is as varied as the variety of seeds there are to put in the ground.  So, the advice I have to give here may be hottly disputed by some and embraced by others.

First we need to know the cycles of the moon.

A New Moon or Dark Moon is the night a moon is not visible.

A Waxing Crescent moon is where 1 to 49% of the right side of the moon is visible and getting bigger.

A First Quarter moon 50% of the right side of the moon is visible and getting bigger.

A Waxing Gibbous moon 51% to 99% of the right side of the moon is visible and getting bigger.

A Full Moon 100% is fully visible.

A Waning Gibbous moon 51 to 99% of the left side of the moon is visible and getting smaller.

A Last Quarter moon is 50% of the left side of the moon is visible and getting smaller.

A Waning Crescent moon is 1 to 49% of the left side of the moon is visible and getting smaller.

A Blue Moon is when there are 2 full moons in one month, the second is the Blue.  This occurs once ever 2 1/2 to 3 years.

Which Moon to plant under:

It is important to decide which phase is good for which gardening task.   Planting seeds is usually done during the waxing phase of the moon.  This is because the movement of the moon and its connection with the earth affects the tides, rivers, and lakes of earth.  When earth’s water is in the gravitational pull of the moon and rising it is believed that seeds and plants more easily absorb that water and will do better if planted during that phase.  However, plants that do well in very dry conditions would be better planted during the waning phases of the moon.

Seeds or potted plants - that are just starting, plant during the waxing phase of the moon - when the right side of the moon is visible and getting bigger.  Usually first and second quarter waxing.

Trees and root crops - Third quarter waning phase.

Soil preparation, cultivation, weeding, starting a compost bin or worm farm - Forth quarter waning phase - when the left side of the moon is visible and getting smaller.
